Mosquitoes are nasty creatures who give the unpopular gift of annoyingly itchy bites. They are most common during the summer, but in warm weather climates with lots of water, they can be bothersome year round. The following five home remedies can help you prevent mosquitoes from being such a nuisance.
Mosquito Plants
Lemon-scented Geraniums (sometimes referred to as citronella) have become known as the mosquito plant due to their ability to repel mosquitoes. Pennyroyal is another flowering plant known to ward off mosquitos and gnats.
Dry Ice
This home remedy won’t repel mosquitoes, but will actually draw them into a specific area which means they’re more likely to leave you alone. Dry ice emits plenty of carbon dioxide which attracts mosquitoes. You can also place the dry ice inside a container and once the insects swarm inside it, you can close the lid.
Coffee Grounds
Mosquitoes often appear around standing water. While the water may be difficult to remove, coffee grounds can be sprinkled in the bodies of water to kill mosquito eggs and prevent them from breeding.
Garlic
Much like garlic deters another blood sucking creature (vampires), it also repels mosquitoes. Garlic extract contains mosquito larvicidal properties. You can crush a few garlic cloves and then boil them in water. This homemade remedy can be poured into a spray bottle and used around your home or even outdoors. Eating garlic can also cause mosquitoes to avoid biting you.
Dish Soap
A mixture of dish soap and water can kill mosquitoes. You can also place a few drops of dish detergent onto a paper plate and place it outdoors in the area you will be sitting to draw them away from you.
There are plenty more home remedies to prevent mosquitoes if you really want to go all out. If those aren’t doing the trick you should consider a bug screen which can increase your home’s living space in addition to blocking harmful UV rays.
